FIGS. Sans Newton.

Should you come across FRESH figs... buy them. As many baskets, boxes, etc that you can get your hands on. Uber seasonal (2 crops, one in early summer and one late summer) this delicate but supremely delicious fruit could and should define seasonal summer eating, above cherries, stone fruit and dare I say it, heirloom tomatoes.

Its really a shame that most people experience this fruit in its dried form (travels better, keeps longer obviously) because the cloyingly sweet, dark, sticky filling in fig newtons could not be more different than the fruit in its fresh of the tree form.

While still jammy in flavor, fresh figs are juicy, light, floral and yet meaty all at the same time. I prefer them sliced and eaten as is, but you can also stuff them with some gorgonzola and wrap them in prosciutto. That's quite beautiful as well.

Mission Figs (dark aubergine in color), Calmryna, and occasionally Adriatic Figs are avail in Socal RIGHT NOW!!! Pick them up at WHOLE FOODS, TRADER JOES (occasionally) and your local Farmer's Market.

Liberte, Egalite et Fraternite aka. Pomme Frites, Croissants and Macarons

A day late, but better late than never.... in lieu of Bastille Day, we celebrate all things french. Thank you france for letting us steal your motto, your fries, bread and desserts. We're lucky in LA to have French Ex-pats and a slew of chefs trained @ Le Cordon Bleu, so finding authentic frites, croissants and macarons aren't too too difficult. Here are some of my favorites around town:

FRITES: Should be thinner than their american counterparts, crispy, tender, lightly seasoned and while not greasy, a little sheen ain't bad. Served with aoli, but... good ole fashion ketchup always welcome.

MACARONS: Not to be confused with the very American Macaroon (a completely different animal) this crunchy, chewy, crispy, soft wheel/pillow of a dessert cookie is one of life's great pleasures as it basically comes in any flavor you can dream up. I love them. And we have a few places to get them.

CROISSANTS: Do I really need to say anything? Other than don't buy one from Starbucks? I'm noticing a trend of crunchy and flakey on the outside, soft and pillowy on the inside, thank you butter for being ever so amazing and delicious.
